Ice Calving
The periodic rupture and collapse of Glaciar Perito Moreno's 197-ft
(60-m) front wall provides a great spectacle. This extraordinary
phenomenon is caused when the
glacier advances close to Península
Magellanes, damming the Brazo
Rico (Rico Arm) of Lago Argentino.
With no outflow, the lake's water
rises until the pressure of its weight
forces the dam to burst and, in a
cataclysmic explosion of ice and
water, causes the glacier's front wall
to come crashing down. Visitors in
2008 were the last lucky witnesses
of this event.
