A QUESTION OF SCALE: John Lane wrote the scale in words above the scale bar, 'threescore poles
to the ynche'; 1 inch to 60 poles. A pole, also called a rod or perch, was an old-style unit of land meas-
urement, equal to five and a half yards. Despite this, he explained in a note that he had not drawn the
surrounding area to scale, only the warren - and presumably not the rabbits!
