OVER THE PALACE PALE: This may be the earliest known view of Nonsuch Palace, which Henry
VIII started building in 1538 with the aim that there would be 'none such' to match it. It shows the tur-
reted gatehouse and buildings inside the outer wall, as seen by bird's eye, from the direction of the av-
enue between the two parks, which led to London. It is worth looking at surviving maps of the area in
which important buildings were located, in case they were shown as landmarks.
