Like the glove map on the previous page, this square piece of printed fabric is a sample of
a registered design. It was created by Allan Arthur Fletcher & Co, a Scottish firm of dyers
and calico printers based in Glasgow, and is one of more than 500 cloth designs registered
by the company during the 1870s and 1880s. We do not know whether this particular design
was ever mass-produced, or even what its purpose was. As it is too small to be a tablecloth
