ALBERT PARK, EAST LONDON, 1845
London is a densely populated metropolis, yet it contains many parks and open spaces, large
and small. Some of these are very old - Hyde Park and St James's Park were first opened
to the public in the seventeenth century - and others much newer. The development of Re-
gent's Park in the 1820s inspired the creation of other public parks in cities and large towns
throughout the United Kingdom over the following decades. In London itself these included
Battersea Park and Kennington Park in the south and Victoria Park in the east. The latter,
