A PHANTOM ISLAND: Sandy Island was supposedly sighted near New Caledonia by Captain Cook
in 1774. It subsequently appeared on many maps, including this British Admiralty chart of the south-
west Pacific Ocean, dating from 1885. The island's non-existence, and its removal from Google Maps,
featured in news headlines around the world in November 2012.
