RAILWAY TOWN: The market town of Darlington, lying roughly halfway along the original route, is
closely associated with trains. For many years it was home to three railway manufacturing firms and it
remains a railway junction. The yellow line shown here is a proposed branch to the Yorkshire town of
Croft-on-Tees.
