A murder mystery
KIRK O'FIELD, EDINBURGH, 1567
This rather gruesome item resembles a strip cartoon almost as much as it does a conventional
map. It depicts the death and burial of Henry Stewart, Duke of Albany - commonly known
as Lord Darnley - the second husband of Mary, Queen of Scots. Many details, particularly
the human figures, are drawn out of proportion with one another, presenting a disconcerting
impression to the modern viewer. The plan was enclosed in a letter from Sir William Drury,
Marshall of Berwick, to William Cecil (afterwards Lord Burghley), who was chief adviser to
Queen Elizabeth I of England, Mary's cousin and rival. Drury served as Cecil's eyes and ears
in Scotland, keeping him informed of events likely to interest Elizabeth and her government.
