SECRET AGREEMENT: In May 1916, the British and French governments signed a pact to divide a
large portion of the Middle East between them if they won the First World War. Much of the Sykes-
Picot line separating the French and British zones (labelled A and B, respectively, on this map) re-
mains the basis of current borders.
