that witnessed history'.
What, then, is distinctive about the maps included in this chapter? The answer is a differ-
ence in emphasis, which lies not so much in the inherent qualities of the maps themselves as
in the balance of our approach to them. The stories woven around the twelve maps featured
here tend to concentrate less on the specific content and origin of each one than on the wider
context of the historical events surrounding it. In these short narratives, cartography becomes
a portal for exploring the world of the past.
