UP THE WRONG POLE: Among the many decorative features on the map are polar bears. MacDon-
ald Gill mistakenly drew them at both poles, when they only live at the North Pole. This error was
only spotted at the proofs stage, when it would have been expensive to correct by complete erasure. A
Committee member suggested that the situation might be redeemed by turning the polar bears into a
comical feature, and speech bubbles were duly added to the bears, so one at the South Pole demands to
know 'Why are we here?', and another sings 'It's a long way to Tipperary'!
