Gates to St Petersburg
KRONSTADT, RUSSIA, 1851
In the autumn of 1851, HM Steam Frigate Odin conveyed Sir Hamilton Seymour from Lon-
don to take up his appointment as the British ambassador to the Russian imperial court in St
Petersburg. The diplomatic purpose of this voyage meant that the commander of the Odin , Sir
William Wiseman, was treated as an honoured guest in Russian waters. When he anchored
in Kronstadt, a lieutenant in the Russian navy was sent by the governor to attend upon him.
Wiseman took the opportunity to be shown round this strategically-sited island, at the eastern
