Discoveries of the Resolution
SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE, 1772-1775
The Age of Enlightenment brought about a change in European thought and art. Mapmakers
were no longer interested solely in trade and money, but sought to expand human knowledge
about the world. Exploration in new areas of the globe led chart makers to devise new ways
to show their discoveries, in areas that had been simply blank spaces or unrelated decoration
on earlier charts and maps. The circular chart opposite is a fine example of this phenomenon.
