in a profusion of styles, shapes and colours.
The rise of a class of professional surveyors using new techniques and survey instruments
brought a new era of mathematically constructed work. These men were working to com-
mission and needed to please their employers and advertise their skills. They included scale
bars and compass indicators, and titled their creations to explain what they showed and why
they were made. Although these new cartographic skills were not employed consistently, this
period transformed the art of making maps towards the kind we know today.
