Sailing Wolfe to Quebec
ST LAWRENCE RIVER, NEW FRANCE, 1759
This chart is one of a sequence in the pilot topic of John Veysey, a navigator on board HMS
Neptune , which illustrate successive stages of a voyage up the St Lawrence River. The Nep-
tune was the flagship of Admiral Saunders, and was also carrying General Wolfe.
These two commanders had been instructed by the Prime Minister, William Pitt, to work
together in an ambitious amphibious campaign. Saunder's Navy was to convey Wolfe's
troops to Quebec, and then provide ship-based fire to assist the Army's assault on the French
stronghold of Quebec City. Its capture in September 1759 would subsequently lead to the fall
of Montreal, and to the end of French control of this part of North America.
