Coffee with sugar: a captured French cap-
tain's map
MARTINIQUE, 1757
This map of the French sugar island of Martinique was found among prize papers of the High
Court of Admiralty, where it had lain since the capture of the French merchant ship on which
it was being used during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). Le Constant had been on its re-
turn journey to its home port of Marseille from Martinique laden with a cargo of sugar, coffee
and cocoa, when it was seized somewhere in the vicinity of the British island of Anguilla,
