This chart shows Sir Francis Drake's 'singeing of the King of Spain's beard' - a daring attack
by the English fleet on the nascent Spanish Armada forming in Cadiz harbour. It was drawn,
however, not to celebrate this audacious naval exploit, but to explain and justify the map-
maker's part in it. William Borough, as second in command, made plain to Drake his views
that the raid - carried out when some of the fleet were still to arrive from England - was rash
