THE LIE OF THE SEA: This manuscript chart was made about 1587 to show how best to defend Ply-
mouth, in expectation of an invasion by the Spanish Armada. Any ship approaching the Hoe would be
covered by arcs of fire from cannon and bands of militia stationed around the Sound. In the event,
Drake sailed out to engage the Spanish offshore.
