COMMANDING THE TROOPS: This map was probably designed as a show of support for the Brit-
ish during the Second Boer War of 1899-1902. Among the portraits of commanders forming its border
is Robert Baden-Powell (bottom centre), who later founded the Scout Movement.
Maps have played many roles in military life. They are vital tools when preparing for war,
whether in the course of building or extending defence works (as shown The greatest fortific-
ation in Europe ) , or during reconnaissance to establish the lie of the land. Balloon debate we
discuss a proposed attack that was never carried out. During military engagements, maps may
of course be used for directing the action, but this is not their only function. Combatants and
other witnesses have made maps to record or report upon the progress or results of operations
and battles; Saints and sinners , ' The best fort in America ' and Contours of conflict supply
three very different examples. In practice, maps of this kind are generally drawn shortly after,
rather than in the midst of, the events to which they refer.
More decidedly within the category of maps made after the fact are those intended to aid
later assessment or reassessment of the reasons for a victory or defeat. ' Forward, the Light
Brigade! ' we feature an example produced to help a court determine the merits of a libel case.
More commonly, however, the evaluation was a matter for the military wing of government;
this is the origin of the maps Trench warfare and Neptune comes ashore . The decorative map
