A-hunting we will go
CAMPO DE GIBRALTAR, SPAIN, 1873
The British abroad continued many of their home traditions. This map is a product of a fond-
ness for hunting among the upper classes who formed the officer cadre of the army, whether
in Scotland, Africa or, as here, in Spain. The British army had garrisoned Gibraltar (off the
map to lower right) since 1713, and by 1812 had started the Hunt, when Britain's support
for Spain during the Napoleonic Wars made permission to cross the border easy to obtain.
