The turtle and the missionaries
CHENGDU, CHINA, 1906
The capital of Sichuan province in south-western China, Chengdu has long been acknow-
ledged as one of China's greatest cities. Urban settlement on its site dates back more than
two millennia. For a long time, the city was especially notable for two walled districts within
its boundaries: the rectangular Imperial City, shown near the centre of this Chinese map, and
Shaocheng, the relatively uncoloured area lying immediately to the west. One of Chengdu's
nicknames is Turtle City. Legend states that its outline was determined by following the route
of a crawling turtle. It is also said to resemble the shape of a turtle when viewed from above,
although that is not apparent from this map.
