In-Depth Information
1. Rohan provided shiny gold water-repellent salopettes and outer jackets for us all on Changabang in 1978, which proved ideal for the climb with
sudden changes in weather from scorching sun to blustery snow storms. [back]
2. EMS manager Rick Wilcox sent a huge box, including freeze-dried ice cream, which was unique. Rick expected a wholesale payment, but we
had no money spare so it was some months after our return before I could go halfway to settling the bill. I made up with him by purchasing large
quantities of food for Everest in winter a few years later. Freeze-dried worked at lower altitudes, but above 7,000 metres, it played havoc with di-
gestion. It had the advantage of miniscule weight. Bivvys with the Poles in 1977 and 1978 became a ritual of tea or Tang, followed by borsch mixed
with noodles or instant potatoes, then one freeze-dried meal passed between us, spoon in-situ, a quota of two spoonfuls before passing it on until
it was gone. The meal always finished with hot chocolate. Coffee was saved for the morning. [back]
