In-Depth Information
The only possible hitch is that guesthouses occasionally express concern with expired visas,
although it's rare that people are actually refused a room.

Gay and lesbian travellers
Homosexuality is technically illegal in Myanmar and punishable by fines or imprisonment
- anything up to life in theory (under the country's archaic penal code, which dates back to
colonial times). Actual arrests are rare, however, and gay and lesbian communities are gain-
ing more recognition and acceptance following the partial return to democracy. There is a
discreet gay scene in Yangon - and the city even hosted its first Gay Pride event in 2012 -
but little elsewhere. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_in_Burma for detailed back-
ground onthe situation and utopia-asia.com/tipsburm.htm for practical information.
For visitors, discretion is naturally advised - you're unlikely to encounter any problems
unless you very clearly call attention to yourself. Note that it's culturally acceptable for
Burmese friends of the same sex to hold hands in public, although this is no indication of
their sexual orientation.
