ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE: PUTAO
By air Given uber-crony Tay Za ' s investments in Putao, it's unsurprising that his Air Bagan
airline is also your best bet for getting to the town, with several scheduled flights each week
from Putao to Mandalay via Myitkyina. Air KBZ, Myanma Airways and Yangon Airways
occasionally organize charter flights when there are enough bookings.
Destinations Mandalay (3 weekly; 2hr 20min); Myitkyina (5 weekly; 50min).
ACCOMMODATION

a 12km drive from Putao, the rooms at this genuinely stunning Tay Za-owned property are
housed in thatched cabins complete with log-burning stoves and an on-site spa. Service is
excellent, and the food selection is limited but good - perhaps not as good as you'd expect
at these prices, but given the location maybe that's understandable. Room rates (minimum
two-night stay; prices quoted ar e per person for two nights) include hotel transfers, day-trips
and all meals. Open Oct-April. $3000
Putao Trekking House 424/425 Htwe San Lane 09 840 0138, putaotrekking-
house.com . Pricewise this is the closest thing in Putao to a budget hotel. Accommodation is
in tastefully decorated wooden bungalows with small verandas, private bathrooms and fires
for warmth in both the dining room and on the outdoor deck. The largely Kachin staff ff al so
