electricity each evening. Note that the road to the lake from the railhead town of
HOPIN
is
frequently impassable during the rainy season, and roads around the lake are bumpy at any
time of year.
The lake is part of the
IndawgyiLakeWildlifeSanctuary
, established in 1999 in an effort
to protect the area's bird and animal species, which include several
endangered species
as well as gibbons, gaur, banteng and wild elephants. At certain times of year your fellow
guesthouse residents are as likely to be birdwatchers and field biologists as backpackers
(Dec-March is the main birdwatching season). The only accommodation and visitors' facil-
ities are in the small village of
LONTON
, which sits at the southern end of the lake, making
it handy for excursions to either the east or west lakeshore.
