Lashio
The last major town before the
Chinese border
,
LASHIO
sprawls over a series of hillsides
170km south of the Muse-Ruili border crossing. The town itself has repeatedly risen from
its own ashes like an ungainly phoenix, most recently after a devastating fire in 1988 ripped
through many of its old wooden houses. Formerly the seat of a Shan
saopha
, Lashio has be-
come an important regional hub - sitting between the
Burma Road
leading east, and the
Mandalay-Lashio railway heading west.
Today, there's little reason to visit Lashio unless you are heading on to Hsipaw (Lashio's
airport being the closest), or to China or overland to Bhamo via Namhkan if you have the
rightpermits.However,there'salargeChinese community,asmallcollection oftemples and
several thronging markets to occupy you if you do find yourself here for a day.
