In-Depth Information
PanCherry 81st St, between 26th and 27th sts 02 39924; map . The best of the several
South Asian choices in this area, this cheery Indian restaurant serves refillable curry platters
that are effectively all-you-can-eat. They're pretty tasty, too, not to mention pretty cheap at
just K2500 for meat and K1500 for veggie - a small price to pay. Daily 10am-9pm.
Rainbow 23rd St, at 84th St 02 23266; map . Reasonable choice for cheap, simple local
food; figure on around K3500 per main, or a bit less for the fried noodles. The top level also
constitutes one of this area's nicer places to drink. Daily 8am-9pm.
Shan Mama 81st St, between 29th and 30th sts 02 71858; map . You'll find plenty of
ropey Shan buffet restaurants around the Nylon hotel, but if you're prepared to head a teensy
bit further south, this is an infinitely better bet. It's not all-you-can-eat, but you're almost
guaranteed to leave full - the friendly, English-speaking owner and her all-female coterie of
giggling staff will insist that you try free samples of every single dish before making your
choice. It'll all work out at around K2500-4000. Daily 6am-9.30pm.
V Café 80th St, at 25th St 09 680 4928; map . A respite from the realities of Mandalay for

Twain and the like from their screens and speakers. The food's okay - try a pizza (K6500),
sardine sandwich (K1600) or Thai-style spicy beef salad (K5000), then wash it down with
a so-so espresso (K800). Note that the Sky Bar upstairs is also a grand drinking spot. Daily
9am-10.30pm.
OUTSIDE THE CENTRE
BBB 76th St, between 26th and 27th sts 02 73525, bbbrestaurant.com ; map . Quiet,
urbane and stylish, it's no surprise that each and every one of Mandalay's expats seems to
make a weekly pilgrimage to this restaurant. Their dishes are certainly on the pricey side,
though this surplus gets you a range of flavours simply unavailable elsewhere in town; try
the sea perch (K8500), salmon steak (K9500) or fish kebab (K6300). Also of note are the
excellent burger and chips (K2900), banana and peanut smoothies (K2200), and well-made
cocktails (from K2500). Daily 10am-10.30pm.
Cafe City 25th St, at 66th St 09 522 4054; map . Precisely the same menu as you'll find
at BBB , though a bit further out (just east of the palace walls), and decorated more like an
American bar. Daily 10am-10.30pm.
Emperor 85th St, by Kandawgyi Paya; map . Way down south by the lakeside, this is an ex-

al, Chinese and Thai mains (most in the region of K3000). The atmosphere is most compel-
ling after sundown, when lanterns are illuminated around the complex - and the lake's army
of resident mosquitoes takes to the air for an evening meal. Daily 10am-10pm.
