HotelbytheRedCanal 63rdSt,at22ndSt 0261177, hotelredcanal.com ; map . Now
this is a treat, a traditionally styled affair lurking away by a canal in the side roads east of
the palace. After making your way past the kidney-shaped pool, you'll find a range of rooms
divided into areas named after some of Myanmar's ethnic groups: the Rakhine section is
cheapest, the Shan rooms have views, and the Kachin b oast gorgeous outdoor showers. Free
cocktails are available from the balcony in the evening. $288
HotelMandalay 78th St, between 37th and 38th sts 02 71582, hotelmandalaymm.com ;
map . One of the few central options if you want a “real” hotel with foreign exchange, tour
operators, international restaurants and the like. R oom s are a bit poky for the price, though
things get a little better in the new wing at the rear. $90
MandalayHill 10thSt,byMandalayHill 0235638, mandalayhillresorthotel.com ; map .
This luxury hotel boasts by far the most attractive pool in all Myanmar - with the hill as
a backdrop, it's a wonderful place to swim , and even open to non-guests. The rooms them-
selves are opulently decorated affairs, and those on the upper levels boast predictably good
views; unfortunately for shower-lovers, most have bathrooms that a re ba thtub-only. A great
on-site spa and rather pricey restaurant round out a pleasing picture. $276
Peacock Lodge 60th St, between 25th and 26th sts 02 61429, peacocklodge.com ; map .
An interesting choice way out to the east of town, and a decent recommendation if you feel
like basing yourself somewhere more remote in feel. Their nine rooms (reserve ahead) are
modern, lovingly decorated affairs, and the main building backs onto a pleasant, mango tree-
shaded garden area. It's a little hard t o fi find; from 26th St, look for the sign heading north
down a side road to “Hotel Treasure”. $35
Sedona 26th St, at 66th St 02 36488, sedonahotels.com.sg ; map . The Mandalay branch
of this Singaporean chain forms the de facto base for higher-end tour groups, and as such
often finds itself fully booked despite the stratospheric price tag - one which often can be
halved if booking through an online engine. The appearance of rooms and common areas
alike approximates internation al lu xury norms, though staff aren't always as on-the-ball as
one would expect at this level. $300
Shwe Taung Tarn 14th St, between 88th and 89th sts 02 75405, shwetaungtar-
nhotel.webs.com ; map . Way up north in the high eighties, this hotel may tempt those who
don't fancy a city feel - the scent from the neighbouring fields can be somewhat fresh.
They're decently sized, though, and an evening dip in the swimming pool can feel joyously
relaxing at the end of a long day. $70
