DOWNTOWN
AD1 Between 87th and 88th sts, and 27th and 28th sts 02 34505,
ead.1hotel@gmail.com ; map . Simple, colourful and friendly, this is a popular place with
those willing to brave a very slightly out-of-the-way location. Some beds are better than oth-
ers,sogiveyoursaquickbouncebeforech oosi ngaroom;upperroomshaveviewsthatcould
best be described as “featureful”. No wi-fi. $20
Dynasty 81st St, between 24th and 25th sts 02 35801, hoteldyn-
asty@myanmar.com.mm ; map . Overpriced but just about acceptable as a fallback, this small
hotel's corridors hint at a sort of Bauhaus minimalism, but the rooms make clear that the
whole place is just cheaply designed. The saving grace The re is a decent travel service in the
lobby. Rates do not include breakfast, and there's no wi-fi. $30
ET 83rd St, between 23rd and 24th sts 02 65006, ethotel129a@gmail.com ; map . For
one reason or another, this is just about the most popular place in town at this price level, its
lobby area playing host to a steady hubbub of traveller chat and Facebook messaging each
and every evening. Rooms are merely okay but the location's g ood , and though staff are oc-
casionally surly they're also helpful at doling out travel advice. $30
Garden 83rd St, between 24th and 25th sts 02 31884, gardenhotelmdy@gmail.com ;
map . Budget choice competing with the Nylon around the corner. This one's appealing in a
grubby sort of way, with decent beds, lots of channels on the telly, a/c and 24hr hot water
(sometimesw ay toohot).Staffareprofessionallymindedandadeptatarrangingonwardtick-
ets. No wi-fi. $22
M3Hotel 26th St, between 82nd and 83rd sts 02 67171, mhotelmandalay.com ; map .
This eight-floor venue was one of the newest options in town at the time of writing, and it's
well worth splashing out on a room here if you can afford to. Stylishly attired staff bid every
entrant a warm welcome, then lead the way along carpeted corridors to rooms that do a fair
approximation of international standards; all feature attractive bathrooms (showers only at
Standard level, tubs otherwise) and flats cre en TVs (still a rarity in Myanmar), while some
also boast weighing scales. A fine place. $45
Mandalay City 26th St, between 82nd and 83rd sts 02 61700, mandalaycity-
hotel.com ; map . The most luxurious choice in the city centre, though wi-fi doesn't carry
through to the wood-panelled rooms, which don't quite live up to the promise of the lovely
lobby and entrance area. Service is professional, there's complimentary tea and water, and
the hotel also feature s a small swimming pool out back, underneath the palm trees (and also
open to non-guests). $90
Nylon 83rd St, at 25th St 02 33460, nylonhotel25@gmail.com ; map . Sharing its lobby
with an electrical equipment store, this guesthouse is in near direct competition with the
Garden around the corner; some prefer this, some prefer the other, so you're best advised
