Boat trips can take up the whole day, so it's fortunate that there are plenty of places to eat
on the lake, especially in and around
Nampan
village, and in stilt houses abutting the Phaung

on the lake area,
this elegant stilt house has more or less the same Thai-heavy menu as its sister venue in
Nyaungshwe. The fact that most dishes are available most of the time is rather astonishing,
given the far-flung location.

come to life, this quirky, solar-powered restaurant is located in almost comical solitude on a
shallow hillside east of the lake, and east of the main road south to Maing Thauk, so keep
an eagle eye out for the sign. They serve organic dishes, most of them using veggies grown
in the surrounding fields. It's one of those places where the menu rarely bares much resemb-
lance to what's actually on offer - just ask the affable chef (whom you may have to stir from
slumberorhailfromafield),andbeforelongyoucouldbedevouringdelectablesteamedfish
(K3000), potato soup with ginger (K1500), “dancing” pomelo and avocado in balsamic vin-
egar (K1500) and more besides. Fantastic, and they also do
cooking lessons

A cheery-looking place with
lime-green tablecloths and dangling parasols, this is the best option near the Phaung Daw Oo
Paya, and also a cheap
place to stay
.
The menu itself holds few surprises, but simple mains
are yours for around K2000, and fruit juices (K15000) and beer (K2000) are also available.
It's located just over one of the several footbridges you'll see: just look for the sign.
