One of the most enjoyable side-trips from Nyaungshwe is to the
Red Mountain
winery (

daily 9am-6pm; free), less than an hour southeast by bicycle
off the road to Maing Thauk. Following harvest time in February and March, a range of
wines is produced - Cabernet Sauvignon, two varieties of Shiraz, a rosé, and even a mus-
cat and tawny port. Bottles cost from K7500, though you can drink over wonderful views
fromtheir outdoorpavilion withabargainfour-glass sampler setforK2000.Thebestform
of access is by bicycle; it's not far by motorbike taxi, though since it's hard to find another
one for the return journey, you may be looking at a fare of up to K8000, including waiting
time.

Traditional 30min puppet shows from a family
which has been doing this for decades; the “theatre” is absolutely tiny, which makes for
a truly intriguing atmosphere. Interestingly, they also sell the puppets used for the show
(K10,000-20,000).

road to Maing Thauk, this remote restaurant runs cooking classes (K15,000) on request - a
winning mix of Shan, Padaung and Intha dishes. If you so desire, you can even head out to
the fields to pluck some of the ingredients yourself.

restaurant, this smart little eatery is most notable for its excellent English-lan-
guage cooking classes (K15,000). Start at 9.30am and you can eat your own Shan-style cre-
ations for lunch; start at 3pm and you can do likewise for dinner.
