In-Depth Information
Dream Zatila St 081 50554. Surprisingly elegant for central Kalaw, this is great little
spot for Chinese food, served up in the lovely garden area, or set back from the road in a
pretty house. If you're eating with someone else, dine in Chinese style by getting a combina-
tion of meaty main (K3500) and a veggie one (K2500) to share, possibly with some soup too
if your belly's a-rumbling. Daily 10am-9pm.
Everest Aung Chan Thar Rd 081 50348. A long-time backpacker favourite, selling fare
redolent of the Himalayas - try their filling paneer masala (K3000) or dhal bhat (K2500),
bothofwhichareservedwithrice,chapatiandside-dishes,andfinishupwithalassi(K1000)
or chocolate banana chapati (K2000). Daily 9am-9pm.
Hi Bar Kone Thae Rd 094 2837 0163. Amazingly, this place is actually a bona fide
bar - a hugely pleasant change from the typical Burmese beer-station night out, right down
to the fact that most people will be drinking rum sours (K1000). There are only a dozen or
so seats around its tiny, U-shaped bar, so the vibe is entirely dependent upon who's drinking
here on any particular night; staff and visitors often give the atmosphere a stir with a bash on
the house guitar. Daily 4.30-11pm.
Ma Hnin Si Butar Rd 081 50727. Understated yet gorgeous little teahouse - with its
mocha-coloured tables and kindergarten-size chairs, forest-green wooden doors, mint-col-
oured interior and hand-painted signs, it's like a little work of art that simply begs to be pho-
tographed. The tea (K250) is best taken with deep-fried Indian savouries (K100 for three).
Daily 6am-8pm.

doors,thisteahouseisdecoratedmorelikeaBelizeanbeachshack.Thefare,however,ispure

Pyae Pyae Union Highway 081 50798. A cute little venue on the main road, popular with
young locals on account of its excellent Shan noodles (K500); take them in soup or with
salad, and with a choice of chicken or pork. There's also good curry (K1000), and a range of
cheap noodle and meat dishes. Give the curiously grey “home-made” coffee a miss, though.
Daily 6am-9pm.
Sam's Family Aung Chan Thar St 081 50377. Though it doesn't look all that welcoming
from outside, this is a relaxed and popular place to eat before or after discussing trekking
options with one of the town's most reliable operators . Most of their curries cost K2000 and
