selection of attractive traditional wooden puppets plus a few other fine woodcarvings. Daily
9am-9.30pm.
Nyaung U Market Main Rd; map . Nyaung U's surprisingly calm and pleasant local market
is home to a good little cluster of tourist shops (on the market's north side, parallel to Main
Rd) selling a decent selection of lacquerware, woodcarvings, bags, textiles and clothes -a
good place to pick up a longyi if you fancy going native. Daily 9am-6pm.
Pauk Kan Thiripyitsaya 4 St 065 01143; map . One of several woodcarving workshops
along Restaurant Row. Most of the modern carvings on display are fairly stereotypical (the
inevitable elephants and boring Buddhas) although they also have a small selection of far
more attractive antique pieces on display - mostly on the large size. Daily 7am-10pm.
Shwe Pathein Umbrella Workshop Wet Kyi Inn 09 4934 0854, myanmarhand-
made.com ; map . It'sdifficulttomissthisshopthankstothespectacularly largeandcolourful
Pathein-style parasols laid out in front of it next to the road - the resident artisans can also
usually be seen at work inside. Cotton parasols range from K8000 up to K150,000, and they
also do colourful silk parasols for around K5000-8000. Daily 7am-9pm.
Shwe Pyi Nann Thiripyitsaya 4 St 061 60179; map . Small shopping complex with little
boutiques selling thanaka , jade and assorted souvenirs. The petrified wood outlet is worth a
look: the large and expensive carvings may not appeal, but they also do some nice petrified
wood jewellery, including bangles, necklaces and earrings, from as little as K1000 - an un-
usual and attractive souvenir. Daily 9am-9pm.
Tun Handicrafts/Moe Moe Bagan-Chauk Rd, New Bagan 061 65063; map . Upmarket

DIRECTORY
Banks All the banks marked on our Nyaung U map have ATMs (note that the MAB bank
only takes Visa). There's a foreign exchange counter at the AGD Bank on Thiripyitsaya 4
St, at the CB Bank on Main Rd, and at the MAB Bank on Anawrahta Rd.
Golf There's a fine 18-hole course at the Bagan Golf Club, on the edge of Nyaung U ( 09
4026 30885, bagangolfresort.net ) .
Internet Virtually all our recommended hotels (and many restaurants) offer free wi-fi, al-
though connections are generally erratic and brain-crushingly slow - the enhanced wi-fi
connection at Weather Spoon's Bagan is generally reckoned the fastest and most reliable
in town. There are also plenty of internet cafés, although again you might die of old age
before you manage to get properly online. In Nyaung U try the Cyber Café at A Little Bit
