In-Depth Information
head for this newly opened restaurant under Swiss-Italian management hidden away on the
rooftop of the Yar Kinn Tha Hotel . The short but well-chosen menu (mains K4400-6400)
offers delicious and authentic Italian fare, including pasta, risotto, lasagne and a couple
of fish and meat secondi , plus excellent salads - the insalata Siciliana is a joy. Daily
11.30am-9.30pm (last orders).
A Little Bit of Bagan Thiripyitsaya 4 St 061 60616; map . One of the biggest and busiest
places along Restaurant Row, in a large thatched pavilion attractively lantern-lit by night, al-
though sometimes let down by lousy service. Food (mains K3000-6000) is a reliable mix of
European and Asian: the Indian food (set meals K3500-5000) is probably the best in town,
although portions are small, and passable pizza and pasta, along with all the usual Chinese
favourites and a few Myanmar curries, are also on offer. There's a second (usually much
quieter)branchatthebottomofThiripyitsaya4Stsportinganornatewoodenfacadeandwith
an identical menu. Daily 7.30am-9.30/10pm.
Moe Moe Win Yangon Monhinga Main Rd; map . For a break from the usual tourist break-
fast of fried eggs and toast try this shoebox café specializing in excellent morning mohinga
(K1000). Daily 6am-9pm.
Swe Tha Har San Main Rd 09 4026 48252; map . Pretty little restaurant, handy for the
guesthouses along Main Rd and lit up after dark with a blaze of candles and fairy lights -
although road noise slightly spoils the romantic atmosphere. Chinese and Thai (most mains
K2500) are the main offerings, far from authentic but palatable enough and at a good price.
Daily 10am-10pm.
Weather Spoon's Bagan Thiripyitsaya 4 St 09 4309 2640; map . This unpretentious
little café is far and away the nicest place to eat in Bagan (and much better than the British
chain whose name the UK-returned owner has nostalgically adopted). The superb and en-
tirely authentic Thai cuisine (mains K2000-3000) would put many a Bangkok restaurant
to shame, while the Western food, including excellent burgers (K3500), is equally good,
and there's also an above-average selection of international vegetarian dishes, plus assorted
Chinese fare, all at super-competitive prices. Also has the best wi-fi connection in Bagan.
Daily 9am-10pm.
WET KYI INN
Queen Main Rd 061 60176; map . The best and liveliest of Wet Kyi Inn's various res-
taurants, in a pleasant open-air thatched pavilion decorated with the obligatory (for Bagan)
fairy lights and hanging lanterns. The generic menu (most mains K4000-6000) includes the
usual Chinese selection with a handful of Thai and assorted Western dishes (pizza, pasta,
grills), although the real stars of the show are the splendid, delicately spiced Myanmar cur-
ries, presented on big lacquerware dishes (like a kind of Burmese thali) and served up with a
good spread of accompanying side dishes and condiments. Daily 10am-10pm.
