E-BIKES
Tourists aren't allowed to ride motorbikes in Bagan, although renting an e-bike (electric bi-
cycle) offers a reasonable (if slightly slower) alternative, and saves you the effort of cycling.
Chinese-made e-bikes are available to rent from many places in Nyaung U and New Bagan
- small electric motors (operated via a moped-style handlebar throttle) give you a cruising
speed of around 20-30km/hr, depending on the size of the bike, while spinning the pedals
offers a quick turbo-charge as needed, useful on hills and dirt tracks. You might want to take
your bike for a test drive before committing to it.

HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGE
The classic way to tour Bagan is by horse-drawn carriage - a romantic, if not terribly com-
fortable, way of exploring the sights, saving you the bother of navigating your own way and
allowing you to cut along sandy backroads which are hard work on two wheels.
Horse-drawncarriagerental Rates start from as little as K25,000 per day/K15,000 per half
day, and you can book either through your hotel or a local tour operator, or approach a driver
directly - in Nyaung U they can often be found hanging around at the top end of Thiripyit-
saya 4 St and around the bus station.
TAXI
For maximum speed and comfort hiring a taxi is the way to explore the temples, although
you'll miss out on a lot of the atmosphere of the archeological site while stuck inside a
vehicle. Rates are around K35,000/day, or K20,000/half day.
