EATING AND DRINKING
There's a convivial little cluster of teahouses and cafés along the street around the
Gold Rain
Tea Shop
, while towards dusk dozens of food stalls set up here, creating one of the region's
most appealing
night markets
. For breakfast

, there's a good stall about five build-
ings west of the
Pan Nu Yaung
restaurant.

tea, coffee and enormous Chinese-style buns stuffed with minced chicken or pork.

This smart, new, modern restaur-
ant has taken Meiktila's limited eating scene several notches upmarket. The menu includes a
big list of authentic Thai dishes plus a slightly shorter and less interesting Chinese selection,
backed up by a long drinks list. Mains K2000-5000.

Thazi
The crossroads town of
THAZI
sees a certain amount of tourist traffic due to its location at
the intersection of the Yangon-Mandalay railway and the roads east to Lake Inle and west
to Meiktila and Bagan. You might find yourself overnighting here depending on how your
transport connections work out, although there's no real incentive to linger, especially with
the far more attractive Meiktila so close to hand.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE: THAZI
By bus
There's no bus station in Thazi - services drop off and pick up passengers along the
main road. Regular pick-ups (45min) run from Thazi to Meiktila, from where there's a wider
range of bus services heading north, south and west.
Destinations
Kalaw (3-4 daily; 2hr); Naypyitaw (2 daily; 3-4hr); Taunggyi (3-4 daily; 3hr
30min); Taungoo (2 daily; 5-6hr).
By train
Thazi is on the main Yangon-Mandalay line. The railway station is a couple of
minutes' walk north of the main road through town.
