In-Depth Information
By bike The town centre is very compact, although exploring the temples is best done by
bike. Than Tun Bicycle Rental (closed Sun), between the town centre and the jetty, has loads
of gearless bikes for K2000/day. Alternatively, ask at your guesthouse.
By tuk-tuk Rakhine-style “tuk-tuks” - a motorbike with a mini pick-up-style attachment
bolted to the back - meet all incoming ferries.
ACCOMMODATION

upmarket places have their own generators; budget options leave you in the dark.
Golden Star Resort Guesthouse 116 Minbar Gyi Rd 09 4967 4472. Friendly and com-
petitively priced guesthouse (with singles forjust $13).The whole place feels abit makeshift
and tumbledown, but rooms are comfy enough an d the communal garden is also pleasant,
while rates include an above-average breakfast. $20
Lay Myoe River Resort Guesthouse Minbar Gyi Rd 09 852 2139. Mrauk U's cheapest
accommodation, with simple boxy little rooms with fan a nd attached bathroom (cold water
only). Basic but reasonably clean, and at a very fair price. $12
Mrauk Oo Princess Resort Riverfront 043 50232, mraukooprincessresort.com . The
town's only upmarket option at present - attractive enough, but spectacularly overpriced in
the absence of any competition. Accommodation is in 33 rather stern-looking black-wood
“village houses” lined up next to a gorgeous lotus pond - although the corrugated iron roofs,
slightly tatty rooms and minimal facilities (no pool, no wi-fi, no TVs - but there is a spa)
make this one of Myanmar's most shameless rip-offs. They can a lso a rrange a private boat
from Sittwe for a modest $550 - although this does include lunch. $330
Mrauk U Palace Resort Alotawpyi St 09 853 2277, mraukupalaceresort.com ,
mraukupalaceresort@gmail.com . Recentlyopenedplacewithso-sowood-and-stonecabanas
equippedwitha/c,hotwater,fridge,24hrelectricity,wi-fiandsomeofRakhine'sugliestbed-
spreads. It all looks like a bit of a work in progr ess (and the gardens currently resemble a
building site) but a reasonable option at this price. $45
Nawarat Hotel Yangon-Sittwe Rd 09 852 2264. Functional chalets resplendent in sickly
green shades of paint (looking like a slightly toned-down version of the eyesore Mrauk U
Hotel opposite), although if you can get over the colour scheme the rooms are OK - dated
but comfortably furnished with kettle, fridge, safe, plus wi-fi and 24hr electricity. $65
Prince Hotel Myaung Bwe Rd 043 50174, mraukuprince.com . In a pleasant rural set-
ting a 10min walk from town. Accommodation is in large but overpriced and decidedly
shabby cabanas, none too clean and with plenty of holes through which local insect life is
wont to come visiting. Plus p oint s include the charming owners and good breakfasts. Wi-fi
and a generator are promised. $25
