MYA PYIN VILLAGE
AmataResort&Spa 04342177, amataresort.com . Ngapali'smostoriginal-lookingre-
sort, from the stunning wooden lobby (topped by a kind of abstract boat) through to the cute
two-storey villas, set amid dense trees and constructed in a mix of wood and concrete and
topped with bits of thatch and curiously shaped pitched roofs sticking out at quirky angles.
Inside, big windows illuminate stylish rooms decorated with colourful fabrics and artworks.
Facilities include an excellent spa a nd a rather undernourished pool. Fancier rooms with sea
view come with a massive mark-up. $220
Ngapali Bay Villas 043 42301, ngapalibay.com . This super-chic resort looks like
something straight out of a designer magazine. Rooms come with huge picture windows
and giant mosquito nets cascading from high wooden ceilings, while bathrooms feature roll-
top baths and gilded washbasins - and special sea-view windows from inside the showers
(some rooms also have their own plunge pools). There are also beautiful gardens, a well-
equipped spa, medium-sized pool and upmarket restaurant, and guests also have their own
numbered lounger s on the beach, so there's no squabbling with towel-dropping Germans.
Closed May-Sept. $305
Pleasant View Resort 043 42251, pvrngapali.com . One of Ngapali's better-value re-
sorts - if you don't mind the stylish but rather severe, quasi-industrial design. Rooms in the
two-storey block at the back are also a bit too minimalist for the setting; the bungalows at
the front are right on the beach and are more attractively furnished - and excellent value this
close to the waves in Ngapali. There's a spa but no pool (alt houg h one is pl anne d), and the
attractive Pleasant View Restaurant is right next door. Room $130 , bungalow $180
Residence by Sandoway 043 42233, sandowayresort.com . Squeezed between the
buildings of the Amata Resort , this easily missed little outpost of the Sandoway Resort has
just fourteen beautiful rooms in a very quiet location very close to the waves - the six beach-
front rooms ($40 extra) are as close to the sand as you'll get in Ngapali, a nd g uests can use
all the Sandoway Resort facilities, a 200m walk up the beach. Good value. $140
Royal Beach Motel 043 42411, royalbeachngapali.com . Along with the Memento Re-
sort , this is Ngapali's only budget option at present, with just three basic budget rooms ($40)

(cold water only) and 24hr electricity. There are also some more expensive wood and brick
cabanas ($75-100)inami shm ash two-storey block onthe beach, butthey're darkish andun-
appealing given the price. $40
Sandoway Resort 043 42233, sandowayresort.com . One of Ngapali's longest-run-
