NGWE SAUNG TOURS AND ACTIVITIES
Both the guides listed here can provide bikes and motorbikes, arrange transport (boat or
overland) to Chaung Tha (or just a return boat trip to Chaung Tha - count on around $100
return), plus tours to the local elephant camp, Bird Island and the nearby fishing villages
of Thazin and Sinma. Ko Toe is also planning to launch cookery classes in 2015. Diving
can be arranged through Myanmar Subsea .
TOUR OPERATORS
Ko Toe Bike-rental stall opposite Myanmar Subsea/Wine Wine Le Restaurant 09 4225
08473, kotoe.toegyi@gmail.com . Bike rental, tours and (hopefully by the time you read
this) Ngwe Saung's only cookery classes. If he's not at his home base opposite Myanmar
Subsea, try asking at the nearby Jasmine restaurant.
Tom Tom Village 09 4224 62904, tom.tunlin@gmail.com . Full range of local tours,
including an unusual trip south to Gaw Yan Gyi Island (4hr each way by motorbike, best
done with an overnight stay at the village of Ngayokekaung), offering visits to local vil-
lages and a taste of deep rural life in the Delta (around $45 plus meals for overnight trip).
He was in a temporary office at the time of writing but should have opened a new base in
the village by the time you read this, signed “Sandalwood” (he is also occasionally found
at his second office at the Shwe Hin Tha hotel).
DIVING
Myanmar Subsea Village, next to Wine Wine Le Restaurant 09 4965 3076, myan-
marsubsea.com . Disinterested dive operator offering one-day trips with two dives for $80
including all equipment. They may or may not have a qualified PADI teacher in residence,
depending on whether they've had a better offer from elsewhere.
ACCOMMODATION
Hotels and guesthouses are strung out at discreet intervals along the beach. Most are located
south of the village , although there's a further cluster of large and more upmarket resorts
north of the village too. Pretty much all Ngwe Saung's restaurants and shops are concen-
trated in the village itself, which also boasts a few decent places to stay if you want to be in
the thick of things and don't mind being a walk or bike ride away from the sands. Note that
the government electricity supply only runs from 6pm to 6am. More upmarket places have
their own generators, but in budget establishments expect to be powerless during the day.
IN THE VILLAGE
Hotel Lux 40 Myoma Rd 042 40252, hotellux.com.mm . Attractive mid-range resort in
the middle of the village, set in a minimalist modern white and cream building backing onto
the beach and with a smallish infinity pool right above the sands. Rooms are spacious and
attractively furnished - oddly, they become cheaper the higher up the building you go. Those
