EATING
EatingoptionsinPatheinarestrictlylimited.Aswellasthetwoplaceslistedherethere'salso
a decent nightmarket on Strand Rd, although it's rather crammed in alongside the road and
not the most relaxing place to eat. A number of other restaurants can be found along the wa-
terfront hereabouts, although they mainly serve as local drinking dives.
Myo Restaurant Bwat Kyi Tan Rd 042 24338. This scruffy local drinking hole doesn't
look like much but serves up a big selection of surprisingly good (if rather oily) meat and
seafood mains in the usual Chinese-y style (most mains around K2000), plus cheap beer and
Premier League footie on the TV. Daily 10am-11pm.
Shwe Zin Yaw Pagoda Rd. Cheery local café with a short English menu offering a range
of tempting and well-prepared dishes (K1000-1500) including citrus, pennywort and grilled
prawn salads, Malay soup and various curries including duck, goat's liver, mutton, catfish
and sardine - although don't expect everything on it to be available at any one time. Daily
7am-9pm.
SHOPPING
Bandoola Umbrella Shop Merchant St. Charmingly antiquated shop, and a good place to
pick up a cut-price Pathein-style silk umbrella, which sell here for as little as K2000-2500.
Daily 7am-9pm.
Shwe Sar Traditional Umbrella Workshop 653 Tawyakyaung Rd 042 25127. Pathein's
best-known umbrella workshop, run by the same family for more than a century (some of
their earlier work can now be seen in museums around the country). They make a mix of silk
and cotton umbrellas, created using top-quality traditional ingredients including persimmon
glueandbamboofromtheRakhine mountain. Thesmallest umbrellas costjustK2000,rising
to K70,000 for the largest - way less than you'll pay for the same umbrella elsewhere in the
country. Daily 7am-6pm.
