worth browsing the stalls of the pavement hawkers outside, stretching east along Bogyoke
Aung San Rd almost to the junction with Sule Pagoda Rd and selling everything from old
coins and banknotes through to contemporary paintings. These stalls are also a great place
to pick up Aung San Suu Kyi memorabilia including T-shirts and mugs emblazoned with the
Burmeseicon'subiquitousportrait-imagesofwhichwerebanneduntiljustafewyearsago.

Botun 149 Central Arcade (near the rear entrance to the main market building), Bogyoke
Market 01 384573; map . Established in 1936, this quaint little shop usually has a good
range of unusual Burmese artefacts, curios and colonial bric-a-brac for sale - anything from
old coins and banknotes to antique wooden nat statuettes. Daily except Mon 10am-5pm.
Heritage Gallery Bogyoke Market (around the east side of the market's upstairs front floor,
nexttoYoyomay) 0110527, nostalgia.arts@gmail.com ; map . Beautifulantiqueartefacts
including some particularly gorgeous lacquerware. Sadly, most items are far too big to fit in
your luggage, although shipping can be arranged. Daily 9.30am-4.30pm.
Monument Books 150 Dhammazedi Rd 01 536306; map . The city's best general book-
shop, with a decent selection of titles on Myanmar and other bits of Southeast Asia, plus
some Western fiction and other topics. Daily 8.30am-8.30pm.
Myanma Gems Mart Kaba Aye Pagoda Rd 01 665115; map . The three floors of shops
below the Myanma Gems Museum are the city's best place to shop for gems, jewels and, es-
pecially, jade, with a huge array of stuff on offer and lower prices than downtown, and with
some scope for bargaining. Tues-Sun 9.30am-4pm.
Myanmar Artists Organisation East side of Bogyoke Market 09 4200 27304; map . A
blast of fresh air compared to the lame landscapes and cheesy paintings of monks that fill
most of the city's galleries, showcasing a diverse, inventive and affordable range of work by
upcoming local artists, plus small, cheap unframed paintings and greetings cards. Tues-Sun
9am-5pm.
Pomelo (formerly known as Loft) 2nd floor, 89 Thein Pyu Rd pomeloyangon.com ; map .
Fun little boutique supporting local social projects. The shop's signature brightly painted
papier-mâché animals make a nice souvenir, and they also sell unusual and ingenious knick-
knacks and bric-a-brac - keyrings fashioned from old coins, bottle openers made from re-
cycled tyres and so on - plus some lovely, if pricey, fabrics. Daily 10am-9pm.
Yoyamay Bogyoke Market (around the east side of the market's upstairs front floor, next to
Heritage Gallery) 01 256411, yoyamay.com ; map . This unusual “ethnographic textile
gallery” specializes in traditional Burmese textiles, sourced from across Myanmar (particu-
larly Chin state) and made into bags, cushion covers, table runners, decorative hangings and
so on, plus elegant (but pricey) silk and lotus clothes and scarves. Tues-Sun 10am-5pm.
