COFFEE SHOPS
Yangon's café culture still remains firmly rooted in the traditional tea shop, although
there's also a burgeoning number of modern coffee shops springing up around the city, not
to mention the upmarket Strand Café in the landmark Strand Hotel , proud purveyor of the
country's finest afternoon tea.
365 Café Thammada Hotel 01 243047; map . Cool contemporary café, serving up good
coffee plus a big menu of reasonably priced (mains mostly K4000-5000) pan-Asian food,
plus pasta and steaks. Daily 9am-10pm.
Bar Boon Bogyoke Aung San Rd; map . This chic urban “Dutch Deli & Espressobar” (as
it calls itself) is as smart as it gets in Yangon, with indoor seating plus an outdoor terrace
overlooking busy Bogyoke Aung San Rd. The coffee's not bad (although not cheap either
at around K3000 per cup), and there's also a short menu of light meals (baguettes, soups
and salads; K5000-7000), plus assorted cakes. Daily 8am-9pm.
ParisianCake&Coffee 132SulePagodaRd 01387298; map . Thislivelyplaceiswhat
you get if you cross a French patisserie with a slightly raucous Burmese teashop. The cof-
fee's pretty good, and there are also fancy cakes (K1200-1500), ice cream and fruit juices.
Popular with Yangon's bright young things. Daily 7am-10pm.
OUT OF THE CENTRE
AlamandaInn 60bShweTaungGyarRd 01534513, hotel-alamanda.com ; map . Idyllic
restaurant attached to one of Yangon's most appealing small hotels , set beneath a sweeping
pavilion in the garden in front. Food features a good selection of light meals and snacks
- sandwiches, salads, crepes and baguettes (K2500-6500) - plus European steaks, meat
and fish mains, and (surprisingly) a selection of tagines and couscous (most mains
K8000-10,000). Daily 6.30am-9.30pm.
FeelMyanmarFood 124PyihtaungsuAvenueSt 0973208132, feelrestaurant.com ;
map . Plenty of Yangonites vote this the city's best place to sample Burmese food, as proven
by the queues which form most lunchtimes and evenings outside its doors - arrive early or
expect to wait (and don't come at all if you're looking for a quiet romantic meal). The res-
taurant occupies an attractive bamboo-lined, jungle hut-style construction, with food laid out
in a big buffet spread at the back - the helpful, English-speaking staff will guide you around
and explain what's on offer, typically including all sorts of Burmese veg and meat curries,
quite delicately spiced. Expect to pay around K5000 for one dish plus vegetables, soup and
rice. Daily 6.30am-8am.
