area, but not worth a special trip otherwise. Daily 7am-11pm.
NilarBiryani Anawratha Rd; map . Bright, busy and cheerfully scruffy modern café with gi-
ant curry-filled tubs set out along the front. As the name suggests, this place does one thing -
biryani - but does it very well, with chicken, mutton and veg options (K1900-2200) served
in big, inexpensive portions, and the meat slow-cooked to perfection (although served with a
positively foul Burmese-style soup rather than the Indian-style sauce). Also has a big selec-
tion of juices, lassis and ice cream, but no beer. Daily 10am-10pm.
Nooch 387/397 Upper Shwe Bonthar Rd 01 378166, noochbar.com ; map . Cheery café-
style restaurant with chirpy lime-green decor and a good range of pan-Asian dishes (mains
around K5000), particularly Thai. Daily 11am-11pm.

ing in Yangon's most famous colonial hotel . Afternoon tea in the Strand Café (served
either European- or Burmese-style; 2.30-5pm; $20) is everlastingly popular, and they also
do a range of international mains ($15-20) including an upmarket take on traditional mo-
hinga . Alternatively, there's European-style fine dining in the posh Strand Grill with a short
menu of fish and meat mains ($24-46). Strand Café daily 7am-10.30pm; Strand Grill daily
6.30-10.30pm.
SuleShangri-La 223 Sule Pagoda Rd 01 242828; map . The restaurants at this plush hotel
offer an upmarket alternative to local café and street dining. Downstairs, the bright Café Sule
serves up classy buffets (lunch $22, dinner $30) plus a big selection of à la carte European
and Asian mains (around $10). Upstairs, the Summer Palace restaurant specializes in pan-
Chinese fine dining (mains $10-13), including lavish dim sum. Café Sule daily 6-10am,
11.30am-2.30pm & 6.30-10pm; Summer Palace daily 11am-2.30pm & 5.30-10pm.
Suzuki 182 Sule Pagoda Rd 01 392686; map . A popular backpacker hangout, this long,
skinny café squeezed in along Sule Paya Rd serves up a reasonable selection of Thai and
Chinese food (mains K3000-5000) - nothing fancy, but tasty enough, and reasonably priced,
with cheery foreigner-friendly service, cheapish beer and decent coffee thrown in for good
measure. Daily 9am-10pm.
Thone Pan Hla 454 Mahabandoola Rd; map . Archetypal local Yangon teahouse, good for
breakfast mohinga (available until around 10am; K400) and other affordable standards like
Shan noodles (K700). Daily 6am-7pm.

new bistro has added some welcome pizzazz to Yangon's moribund Strand Rd. The funky
