Environment
Cambodia's landscape ranges from the highs of the Cardamom Mountains to the lows
of the Tonlé Sap basin, and includes some critically endangered species clinging on in
the protected areas and national parks. However, these species and their habitat are
under threat from illegal logging, agricultural plantations and hydroelectric dams for
electricity. Cambodia faces a challenge to balance the economy and its need for elec-
tricity against the desire to develop sustainable ecotourism.
The Tonlé Sap lake provides a huge percentage of Cambodians' protein intake, 70% of which
comes from fish. The volume of water in the Tonlé Sap can expand by up to a factor of 70 dur-
ing the wet season.
