Pol Pot & the Legacy of the Khmer Rouge
The Khmer Rouge controlled Cambodia for three years, eight months and 20 days, a
period etched into the consciousness of the Khmer people. The Vietnamese ousted the
Khmer Rouge on 7 January 1979, but Cambodia's civil war rumbled on for another
two decades before drawing to a close in 1999. Finally, more than 20 years after the
collapse of the Khmer Rouge regime, serious discussions began about a trial to bring
those responsible for the deaths of about two million Cambodians to justice.
