1970s, with a particular emphasis on rehabilitating Seattle's creeks. The
neighborhood and municipal actors recast the role of water in different
ways, sometimes focusing on the creation of habitat for salmon and at
other times working to enlighten urban residents regarding the natural
fl ows that are part and parcel of cities.
A local landscape architect refers to these activities collectively as “un-
building projects” because they are an attempt to rework the role of na-
ture in the contemporary urban landscape. 125 The ideology of salmon is a
means to promote urban environmental activities and, in effect, to raise
the consciousness of residents about their hybrid Metronatural surround-
ings. A local creek activist states, “Without urban salmon, we will have
no connection to fi sh in rural and wilder streams. Fish will become an
out-of-sight, out-of-mind situation. It is much better that 10,000 people
see 10 salmon than 10 people see 10,000.” 126 Getting those ten salmon to
return to Seattle's urban creeks can involve important activities that relate
humans to other humans as well as their surroundings.
