The Breakers The Breakers is full of old-fashioned Hawaiian aloha—
and it's only steps from the sands of Waikiki. This two-story hotel has a friendly
staff and a loyal following. Its six buildings are set around a pool and a tropical
garden blooming with brilliant red and yellow hibiscus; wooden jalousies and
shoji doors further the tropical ambience. Each of the tastefully decorated,
slightly oversize rooms comes with a lanai and a kitchenette. Smaller families will
fit comfortably into the double rooms, but if you need more room, book a larger
garden studio. One of the best things about the Breakers is the location, just a 2-
minute walk to numerous restaurants, shopping, and Waikiki beach.

Hawaiiana Hotel The hotel's slogan—“The spirit of old Hawaii”—
says it all. The staff here will treat your family like their own: holding the babies;
offering puzzles, books, and games to the youngsters; and kidding the teenagers
until they start laughing. The lush tropical flowers and carved tiki at the
entrance on tiny Beach Walk set the tone for this intimate low-rise hotel. From
the moment you arrive, you'll be embraced by the aloha spirit: At check-in,
you're given a pineapple, and every morning, complimentary Kona coffee and
tropical juice are served poolside. All the concrete, hollow-tiled guest rooms fea-
ture kitchenettes, two beds (a double and a single or a queen plus a sofa bed)—
perfect for a family of three—and a view of the gardens and two swimming
pools. Larger families should book the one-bedroom unit. Hawaiian entertain-
ment is featured every week. The hotel is about a block from the beach and
within walking distance of Waikiki shopping and nightlife.
