Holiday Inn Waikiki Just 2 blocks from the beach, 2 blocks from Ala Moana
Shopping Center, and a 7-minute walk from the Convention Center, this Hol-
iday Inn has a great location and offers this chain's usual amenities for prices that
are quite reasonable (for Waikiki, anyway). Plus children 12 and under eat free
at the on-site restaurant. (That'll save you a few bucks.) All rooms, which have
a modern Japanese look, come with either a king or two double beds. Families
of four will probably be happier with two connecting rooms; although four can
fit into one room, it is a tight fit. The property sits back from the street, so noise
is at a minimum. The staff is unbelievably friendly.

Inexpensive
Hawaiian Monarch Part hotel and part condo, this high-rise is just across the
street from the Ala Wai Canal, within walking distance of the Hawaii Conven-
tion Center. It offers tropically decorated but very tiny budget rooms. (The bath-
rooms are so small you have to close the door to sit on the toilet.) However, this
is one of the more affordable places to stay in Waikiki near the convention cen-
ter. The cheapest doubles have either two twin beds or a queen bed; fans of king
beds will have to pay a bit more for a deluxe room. Although they have connect-
ing rooms, these cannot be guaranteed when you book. (You do not want to get
two rooms down the hall from each other or worse—on different floors—so skip
this option.) Families will be happier in one of the suites, which have kitchenettes
with a hot plate/oven and toaster, just enough to make breakfast, sandwiches, and
snacks. The location allows easy access in and out of Waikiki by car, and the
beach is just a 10- to 15-minute walk away. There's a huge sun deck (the largest
in Waikiki, they claim) with a pool on the sixth floor if you don't want to schlepp
to the sands. Request a room facing the Ala Wai Canal for the best view.
