In-Depth Information
book tells the story of a baby green
turtle's adventures through Hawaiian
waters.
If you are planning a trip to Hawaii
Volcanoes National Park, check out
the video VolcanoScapes 3 . . . Living
On The Edge!—Hawaii's Kilauea Vol-
cano. Not only is the footage of the
eruption spectacular, but the cultural
historical information is entertaining
as well as informative. For the Hawaii
portrayed in the movies, the old
favorite is Hawaii, made in 1966 with
Julie Andrews and Max von Sydow
and based on James Michener's book,
which is not entirely accurate, but
close enough for the movies. For pure
entertainment there's Blue Hawaii,
made in 1961 with Elvis Presley. It has
a hokey plot, but it's Elvis, in Hawaii,
with Angela Lansbury as his mom.
Older kids can get a primer on the
bombing of Pearl Harbor with the
films Pearl Harbor, a Hollywood
blockbuster starring Ben Affleck; and
Tora! Tora! Tora!, which depicts the
famous December 7, 1941, incident
from both the U.S. and the Japanese
points of view.
If you would like to play Hawaiian
music to get your kids in the mood, a
couple of websites will guide you
through the wonderful world of
Hawaiian music: www.hawaii-music.
com and www.mele.com . You can lis-
ten to different songs, order CDs, read
about the history of Hawaiian music,
and even track the trends of Hawaiian
music over the years.
