9 Entertainment for the Whole Family
Kauai is known for lots of things: the most beautiful beaches in the state, the mag-
nificent Na Pali cliffs jutting into the ocean, the incredible rainforests, the wide
panoramas of the Waimea Canyon. But it is not known for a vibrant nightlife.
Local families seek out their own entertainment; below are their favorite options.
THEATER
Occasionally the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center, 3-1901
Kaumualii Hwy., Lihue ( & 808/245-8270 ), is a venue for professional produc-
tions, cultural events, concerts, and even films. For arts and culture, local resi-
dents generally rely on the plays put on by the nonprofessional group the Kauai
Community Players; call & 808/245-7700 to find out what the latest pro-
duction is and where it will be performed. It's not Broadway (or off-Broadway),
but it is energetic community theater at its best.
The Kauai International Theater performs at the intimate 62-seat theater in
the Kauai Village Shopping Center. Calling itself “The Farthest Off Off Off
Broadway in the Country,” the small theater stages musicals, comedies, dramas,
and local and international plays year-round. For information on the next pro-
duction, call & 808/821-1588.
The Hawaii Children's Theatre, 5726 Noni Place, Kapaa ( & 808/246-
8985 ), has periodic performances of kids' theater; call for details about their
next production.
HAWAIIAN MUSIC & HULA
There are a couple of places you can take your family to watch the hula for free.
The Poipu Shopping Village offers free hula performances every Tuesday and
Thursday at 5pm in the outdoor courtyard. The Coconut Coast of Wailua,
Waipouli, and Kapaa offer sunset torch-lighting ceremonies, music, and other
evening entertainment, but the real action takes place after dark. Starting at
5pm, the Coconut Marketplace, 4-484 Kuhio Hwy. ( & 808/822-3641 ), fea-
tures a free hula show every day, performed by local residents ranging in age
